Waste is a resource but in a wrong place, wrong form. Currently more than 4 billion tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) are produced in worldwide every year. Land fills represent the conventional destination of the MSW, which currently costs the global community more than 200 billion dollars per year. While MSW in landfills is responsible for 12% of global emissions of methane and 5% of the total production of carbon emissions at the time being, it is projected that these values could increase by 50% in 10-15 years.
As many countries are aiming at sustainable and safe disposal of MSW, Waste to Energy (W2E) and Waste to Water (W2W) plants are considered as the best practices. Many countries are establishing mechanisms to attract investors and IPP to develop W2E and W2W based on (PPA) and WPA agreements respectively over a fixed period of time up to 25 years. BIET together with partners in Europe and USA is developing and investing in W2E and W2W projects in different countries worldwide.
